For hikers, swimmers and first-timers in the mountains · Annecy, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Grenoble

1. Lake Annecy: swim and walk

Clear water, public beaches and a lakeside path. Swim with a group in the early morning when the lake is calm.

Tip: Swim only in authorised areas and never alone.

2. Chamonix: glaciers and refuges

Cable cars reach high viewpoints; walking trails reach refuges where hikers eat at shared tables.

Tip: Book refuges ahead in summer; high altitude needs proper gear and a forecast check.

3. Grenoble: the city of three massifs

Take the cable car to the Bastille, then join a Sunday walk group into the Chartreuse or Vercors.

Tip: Trains and buses reach many trailheads — no car needed.

4. Mountain safety, briefly

Check the mountain forecast, tell someone your route, turn back early. Group hikes on the platform list their difficulty and meeting point.

Tip: Emergency number in France: 112.
