1. Saturday morning: the market and the canal

Start where Parisians start — a neighbourhood market, bread from the queue that looks longest, and a walk along the Canal Saint-Martin where the footbridges and locks set a slower pace.

Tip: Markets finish around lunchtime; arrive before 11:00.

2. Saturday afternoon: squares and slow looking

The Marais and the Place des Vosges reward people who sit down. Choose one museum room, not a whole museum, and look for twenty minutes.

Tip: Many national museums are free on the first Sunday of certain months — check the museum's own site.

3. Saturday evening: a table and a dance

Belleville and the Buttes-Chaumont slopes are where long tables, guinguettes and bals happen in warm months.

Tip: Join a supper club or a Cercle dinner — you will not eat alone.

4. Sunday: Montmartre steps and a picnic

Climb early before the crowds, then come down the quieter side streets for a picnic with people you met the night before.

Tip: Métro and walking beat any car in Paris; buy a reusable card.
