1. Avignon: the palace and the festival
In July the whole city becomes a stage. The rest of the year the Palais des Papes and the ramparts are calm and walkable.
Tip: Festival accommodation fills early; travel by train.
2. Arles: arenas and photography
The Roman arena still hosts events, and summer brings photography exhibitions across the town.
3. Villages of the Luberon
Gordes sits on its hill above lavender fields and stone terraces; go early, walk between villages and share the ride.
Tip: Lavender usually flowers from late June to July, depending on altitude and year.
4. Markets and long lunches
Weekly village markets are where Provence meets itself. Shop together, then cook in a shared kitchen.
